Greenhouse Plastic Features Guide

Understanding advanced film technologies helps you select the right covering for your operation.

Anti-Drip / Anti-Condensate

Surface treatment that spreads condensed water into a continuous film instead of droplets, improving light transmission and reducing disease risk.
The inner film layer is treated with a surfactant/wetting agent. Instead of forming round droplets that can cut light transmission by 8-15%, water spreads and runs to gutters. Benefits include: more PAR reaching crops, less Botrytis and foliar disease pressure from dripping water, and slight thermal benefits at night. Conventional AC additives may lose effectiveness in 1-3 years, though newer formulations can last the full 4-year film life.

Infrared / Thermal (IR)

Mineral or polymer additives block long-wave IR from leaving the greenhouse at night, reducing heating costs by 15-30%.
IR films use additives like EVA, kaolin, or siliceous earth to absorb or block infrared radiation. Classic trials show 15-30% heating energy reduction vs standard PE. Night temps stay a few degrees higher. IRAC combines InfraRed + Anti-Condensate for maximum benefit. Newer smart formulations also cut daytime heat load while maintaining night thermal retention. For heated commercial houses, IR + AC is typically a strong ROI choice.

UV Protection & Stabilization

Chemical additives (HALS, UV absorbers) protect the plastic from sun degradation and can filter specific UV bands for pest/disease management.
UV stabilizers like HALS prevent polymer chain breakdown from UV exposure. Without them, PE goes brittle in 6-18 months. Film ratings (1-year, 4-year) are based on specific UV dose and chemical exposure. UV-blocking films (<380nm) disrupt insect visual cues, reducing aphid/thrips/whitefly pressure. UV-open films support pollinators and beneficials. For sulfur burners or aggressive chemicals, specify sulfur-resistant stabilizer packages.

Light Diffusion

Additives or micro-texture scatter light for more uniform canopy coverage, reducing hot spots and improving yields.
Diffusive films increase scattered (non-directional) light while maintaining high total PAR. Clear films may offer 90% transmission with 25% diffusion, while diffused variants provide 50-77% diffusion at 86-87% transmission. Benefits include deeper canopy light penetration, reduced leaf temperature and sunburn, and more even growth. For most vegetables, cannabis, and ornamentals, IR + diffusive + AC is an excellent combination.

Anti-Fog / Anti-Mist

Related to anti-drip technology, specifically prevents internal fogging at dawn/dusk that can dramatically reduce PAR.
Anti-fog treatments focus on preventing the internal fogging that occurs during temperature transitions. Morning and evening fog on standard films can massively drop PAR right when plants are transitioning between day/night cycles. Combined with anti-drip properties, these treatments ensure maximum light reaches your crops during critical growing periods. Essential for heated double-poly houses.

Chemical Resistance

Specialized stabilizer packages for operations using sulfur burners, chlorine sanitizers, or aggressive pesticide programs.
Sulfur burners and high-rate sulfur fungicides can rapidly degrade standard UV stabilizers. Chlorine products and PVC contact also accelerate aging. Manufacturers offer agrochemical-resistant formulations with specialized HALS/UV absorber blends. Critical consideration: a 4-year rated film without proper chemical resistance can behave like a 2-year film in heavy spray environments. Always specify your chemical program when ordering.

Why GSM matters more than mils for woven covers

Don't Get Fooled by "9 mil" Woven Plastic

With woven greenhouse plastic, "mil" is basically a marketing label. A woven cover can be called "9 mil" or "12 mil," yet weigh almost nothing thanks to a super-thin woven core. GSM (grams per square meter) tells you how much actual material is in the product—and that directly predicts strength, tear resistance, and lifespan.

How "9 mil" and "12 mil" woven covers actually stack up

Mil Label Competitor GSM* Hortitech GSM % Heavier
9 mil woven ~140 gsm 195 gsm ~40% heavier
12 mil woven ~160 gsm ~203 gsm ~27% heavier

*Based on common US greenhouse-supply listings; exact weights vary by manufacturer.

Quick takeaways for growers

  • Don't buy woven covers on mils alone—two "9 mil" products can differ by 40-50% in actual material.
  • Ask for GSM—if a seller won't share it, that's a red flag.
  • Hortitech's 195 gsm heavy-duty clear delivers the weight (and performance) you'd expect from a higher-mil product—at a fair price.

Why Choose 9 Mil Woven Over 6 Mil Film?

9 mil woven plastic offers 4+ years of durability compared to just 1-2 years for standard 6 mil film. The woven scrim construction prevents tears from spreading and provides superior wind resistance in severe weather. While the upfront cost is higher, fewer replacements mean significant long-term savings. The heavier material also stays in place better during installation and everyday use, making it the professional choice for commercial greenhouses.

9 Mil Woven Greenhouse Plastic

Frequently Asked Questions

What is 9 mil woven greenhouse plastic?

9 mil woven greenhouse plastic is a heavy-duty covering material that combines a thick polyethylene layer with an embedded woven scrim (grid pattern) for reinforcement. The '9 mil' refers to the thickness (0.009 inches or 0.23mm), making it significantly more durable than standard 6 mil film.

How does woven compare to standard 6 mil film?

Woven plastic offers several advantages over standard 6 mil film: 4+ year lifespan vs 1-2 years, tear-resistant construction that prevents rips from spreading, better wind resistance, and more stable installation due to its weight. While it costs more upfront, the reduced replacement frequency provides significant long-term savings.

What's the lifespan of 9 mil woven plastic?

With proper installation and care, 9 mil woven greenhouse plastic typically lasts 4-6+ years. The UV stabilization protects against sun degradation, and the woven scrim reinforcement prevents the tears and stretching that cause standard films to fail prematurely.

Is this material UV-treated?

Yes, our 9 mil woven plastic includes UV stabilizers throughout the material. This protects both the plastic itself from sun degradation and provides some UV filtering for your plants. The UV treatment is rated for 4+ years of outdoor exposure.

What's the light transmission percentage?

Our 9 mil woven clear plastic provides 85%+ light transmission, ensuring your plants receive optimal sunlight for healthy growth. The woven scrim pattern provides slight light diffusion, which can actually benefit plants by reducing hot spots and providing more even light distribution.

How do I measure for greenhouse covering?

Measure the width of your greenhouse frame from ground to ground (over the top), and add 12-18 inches on each side for proper overhang and secure fastening. For length, measure the total length and add at least 2 feet on each end. When in doubt, order slightly larger - you can always trim excess, but you can't add material.

Do you offer custom sizes?

Yes! We offer custom cutting for both width and length. Contact our sales team at (541) 605-3555 with your specific dimensions, and we'll provide a quote for your exact requirements. Custom orders typically ship within 3-5 business days.

What's the maximum width available?

Our 9 mil woven plastic is available in widths up to 50 feet. For greenhouses requiring wider coverage, you can overlap multiple pieces using proper seaming techniques, or contact us about custom welded panels for seamless coverage.

How much overhang should I allow?

We recommend 12-18 inches of overhang on all sides for proper installation. This allows adequate material for securing with wiggle wire and channel, and provides a buffer for any installation adjustments. More overhang is always better than not enough.

How do I install this on my greenhouse?

Installation involves: 1) Mounting poly lock channel to your frame, 2) Draping the plastic over the structure on a calm day, 3) Securing with wiggle wire starting at the ridge and working down, 4) Pulling the plastic taut as you go, 5) Trimming excess material. Watch our installation video guide on this page for detailed instructions.

What supplies do I need for installation?

Essential supplies include: Poly Lock Channel (aluminum or PVC), Wiggle Wire (stainless or galvanized), self-tapping screws for channel mounting, and a utility knife for trimming. Optional but helpful: Poly Repair Tape for any accidental tears, and an extra set of hands for draping the plastic.

Can I install this myself?

Yes, 9 mil woven plastic can be installed DIY with 2-3 people. The material is heavier than standard film, which actually makes it easier to handle in wind. Choose a calm day for installation, watch our how-to videos, and have all supplies ready before you start. Most hobby greenhouses can be covered in a few hours.

Does it work with poly lock channel?

Absolutely! Poly lock channel (also called wirelock or base channel) is the recommended attachment method for 9 mil woven plastic. The channel mounts to your greenhouse frame, and wiggle wire secures the plastic into the channel without any punctures that could lead to tears.

How do I secure the edges?

The best method is using poly lock channel with wiggle wire along all edges where the plastic meets the frame. For ground-level edges, you can bury the plastic in a trench, use ground stakes, or attach to a baseboard. Avoid using screws or nails through the plastic, as this creates weak points that can tear.

Can this be used year-round?

Yes, 9 mil woven plastic is designed for year-round use in all climates. It performs well in temperatures from -40°F to 180°F. The material remains flexible in cold weather and resists degradation in hot conditions, making it suitable for all seasons.

Is it suitable for cold climates?

Absolutely. 9 mil woven plastic is rated for use down to -40°F and performs excellently in cold climates. The material stays flexible even in freezing temperatures, and many of our customers use this product in northern states and Canada where winters are severe.

Can I walk on it during installation?

While 9 mil woven is much stronger than standard film, we recommend minimizing walking on the plastic. If you must walk on it during installation, wear soft-soled shoes and step carefully. The woven scrim provides significant puncture resistance, but sharp objects or heavy concentrated weight can still cause damage.

How do I clean the covering?

Clean your greenhouse plastic with a soft brush or cloth and mild soap solution. Rinse thoroughly with water. Avoid abrasive cleaners or brushes that could scratch the surface and reduce light transmission. Regular cleaning helps maintain optimal light levels and extends the material's lifespan.

What's the lead time for orders?

Standard sizes typically ship within 1-3 business days. Custom cut orders usually ship within 3-5 business days. During peak season (spring), lead times may be slightly longer. Contact us for current availability and shipping estimates for your specific order.

How is the plastic shipped?

9 mil woven plastic is rolled and shipped in heavy-duty packaging. Smaller orders ship via FedEx or UPS Ground. Larger orders may ship via freight carrier on a pallet. You'll receive tracking information once your order ships. Free shipping is available on qualifying orders.

Do you ship to my location?

We ship throughout the continental United States. Alaska, Hawaii, and international shipping are available but may require additional freight charges. Contact our team for a shipping quote to your specific location.

Can I pick up locally?

Yes! Local pickup is available at our Oregon location. Contact us to arrange pickup and we'll have your order ready. This is a great option for large orders to save on shipping costs.
